Description

Ideal cities have preoccupied architects, planners, potentates and visionaries for centuries. This course examines the creation of new cities and the redesign of old ones as the image of earthly paradise. The ancient ceremonial centers of the Maya and Aztecs, the 18th-century jewel of classical French planning that is Nancy, the 19th-century garden cities of England and the Modernist fantasies of the Italian Futurists in Turin and Milan will be included in this rich visual journey into the both the philosophies and practices that produced "cities of dreams."
