Description

Rhino is the industry standard of 3D modeling applications, both affordable and easy to learn. Its files can be exported into any program that supports surfaces or solids, or into CAD/CAM and other prototyping applications used by product designers, as well as those used for architectural and jewelry design and rendering, computer animation, filmmaking and Web design. Realistic renderings are generated by outputting to programs such as Maya, Flash, Photoshop and other popular software. Work begins with a sketch, drawing or physical model and Rhino provides the tools to construct realistic models. Learning the communication language unique to this 3D modeling application allows students to fully realize their designs, as they produce the illusion of three dimensions in digital form. Note: Prior 3D modeling experience is not required. This course is taught on a Windows platform.

Description

How easy is it to design and build your own original action figures and game pieces? In this introduction to 3D modeling, you'll answer these questions as you explore the prototyping process and STEM to STEAM learning in the areas of anatomy, computer science and spatial dynamics. You begin by brainstorming your concept in a sketchbook, and quickly move to the computer where you learn to navigate the powerful 3D modeling software ZBrush. As you become proficient, you'll build and optimize custom toy parts and figures, resulting in dependable 3D models that have the possibility of commercial rapid printing -- a record of your ability as a budding toy designer.

Description

The most popular vector graphics editor, Adobe Illustrator is essential when creating unique images and graphics that require a high degree of precision and scalability -- allowing an artist control of images as small as a bottle cap or as large as a billboard. Since the workflow is vector based, curves do not pixelate as they do in other graphics applications. In this course, you'll create illustrations and freeform sketches as you explore how this program makes it possible to acquire, trace and alter scanned images. You'll "learn by making" with in-class exercises and projects completed as homework. We discuss saving and output options, connecting the learning to the larger world of illustration, print, product and interactive design.

Description

Unleashing the power of bitmap editing involves working with non-linear and non-destructive methods as much as possible. This course presents that workflow using Adobe Photoshop. Lesson topics include layer masks and effects, smart objects, adjustment layers, clipping masks and reverse editing methods to create the most subtle and professional edits to files -- a necessity in the fields of photography, graphic design, illustration and Web design. Complete color modification, damage repair, digital make-up techniques, and complex graphic compositing are among the exercises that come together in a final project that demonstrates your competency with Adobe Photoshop.

Description

In this advanced painting class, concepts of style, technique, content, abstraction and working in series are investigated, along with more sophisticated ways to express both formal and abstract issues. Utilizing the figure, landscape, still-life and architecture as themes in their work, students continue to paint from life and observation as they slowly explore many ways of interpreting subject matter. Students begin to work in series and learn how to develop their ideas sequentially, moving on to experiment with the format and size of work and choice of surface to paint on, with the goal of realizing their own personal language and direction. Most importantly, this course sets the groundwork for the Final Projects studio in the Painting Studies Certificate Program. Please note that in addition to the lab fee, you can expect to have to buy additional supplies for this course. We try to keep this cost under $100, but for specialized courses (jewelry, wood, metals) this may be higher.

Description

Artist Keith Haring once said, "Drawing is still basically the same as it has been since prehistoric times. It brings together man and the world. It lives through magic." Young artists discover the nature of that magic, as they take command of the marks they make, and are provided with a thorough grounding in the fundamentals of drawing and sketching. Assignments utilize a rich array of drawing materials, while expanding on traditional subject matter: still lifes, landscapes, cityscapes and portraits, as well as both observational and abstract applications of making marks. The course is ideal for students with little or no experience who want to explore the magic of drawing. Group discussion and one-on-one instruction are provided to meet the specific needs of each student.

Description

Known today as alternative photographic processes, these early methods (some a century old!) can be used to create striking, unconventional photographic images. This workshop begins with building a pinhole camera and creating a camera obscura. Then, using simple overhead transparencies we'll create basic digital negatives and contact print them onto a variety of hand-coated emulsions (including the cyanotype, Van Dyke brown, and gum bichromate antique processes) using daylight to expose the prints. Images can also be made without photographic negatives by drawing on acetate (cliche-verre) or laying objects directly on the coated papers (photograms) and then exposing. These processes are excellent foundations for post-production experimentation such as hand coloring and collaging or as stand-alone photographic works of art. Students will create unique works of art while enhancing their understanding of the science and history hidden behind the art of photography.

Description

Before ideas can be expressed as motion, aspiring animators must understand the underlying elements (keyframes, fields, level) and accompanying principles (cycles, sync, timing) that are specific to the art form. This course is for artists willing to explore frame-by-frame moviemaking techniques with greater commitment. 2D animation workflow best practices are reinforced in every lesson, as students use digital tools to complete weekly assignments leading to a self-directed final project. Historical examples of metamorphosis, cycled movement and the illusion of gravity are presented to so that students better understand this unique storytelling medium.
