Description

This course introduces students to significant developments in the history of design in Europe and America from 1900 to 2000. Along with an examination of a variety of object types, we will consider works within their social, cultural, political and economic contexts, taking into account materials, technology and theoretical debates. Major art and design movements considered include Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and Art Deco, the German Avant-Garde, American Streamlining, Post-War Machine Art and the International Style, Organic Design, Pop, and Postmodernism.

Description

What is the experience of presenting work in freehand vs. digital format, and how can engaging images be produced by blending the best of both? In this course we will compare digital and freehand rendering techniques used in architecture and interior design. We will visit setup techniques and explore the main tools for rendering using primarily Adobe Photoshop and SketchBook Pro. We will explore outcomes by analyzing different starting points on floor plans, elevations and perspective views, and will review how to add textural notes, landscape features, entourage, reflections and light sources. The course will culminate with a final project that showcases all the learning outcomes.

Description

This course continues the overview of historical trends that have shaped both exterior and interior Western architecture. It covers major figures and movements in architectural and interior design from the early 19th Century to the present. Slide-illustrated lectures and discussions explore the aesthetic and ideological concerns of the Arts and Crafts, Art Deco, Art Nouveau and Modern movements. As in Styles in the Decorative Arts I: Ancient Egypt to 1800, the influence of cultural and sociological factors on architecture and design is addressed throughout, as is the impact of historic styles on contemporary design. Students use this knowledge to identify major historical styles, theorize about current and future design trends, and research a specific theory or style. A written report is required.

Description

The architectural scale model has a unique function during the design process: It is the most effective tangible representation of a building, allowing both trained and untrained viewers to perceive complex spatial relationships from multiple vantage points. This course introduces students to the design and construction of architectural models used to explore and communicate design concepts. Students learn about the different types of models while considering scale, level of detail, use, budget, construction techniques and materials, including the importance of photographing them, preparing them for travel or for further transformation. Each student designs a simple project, builds a scale model of it and produces photographic material to add to their portfolio. This course is a great complement for anyone interested in architecture, interior design, animation, illustration, scenic design or landscape architecture.

Description

This course will focus on learning how to use Revit for every aspect of the design documenting process. Digital technology is a tool to communicate design intent, but the end goal must be a set of complete construction documents that are easily understood by the contractor and client. Students in this course will learn the same techniques and skills used by design professionals to develop commercial-based interior Revit models. They will be exposed to current design trends, but also implement the current code requirements for Universal Design (ADA). Note: Students may load Revit onto their own laptops with Windows capabilities (PC, or a Mac with Boot Camp or Parallels); a mouse is essential. Students may visit the Autodesk student community to download free versions of Revit and other Autodesk products, each with a one-year license.

Description

This course introduces students to basic computer modeling and digital rendering concepts. These techniques can be used to develop interior designs and effectively communicate their spatial qualities and aesthetics to professionals and clients. Using SketchUp, students will learn the fundamentals of modeling forms that will become the basis for architectural components and a completed interior space. Adobe Photoshop will be utilized as a simple renderer to add materials, textures, lighting effects and entourage for presentations. Students will come away with a set of skills that will take them beyond the initial modeling and rendering techniques demonstrated in class, which can be used in many different ways to communicate and develop their designs in their careers.
