Course Description

During the middle of the 20th century, Abstract Expressionism became the art movement that defined the US. Despite the overwhelming popularity of this movement, several artists chose to go against the grain and create paintings that were more representational than abstract. This class will explore the lives and work of some of these artists and the blurred lines between realism and abstraction. Each week you will create compositions and color harmonies influenced by the works we study, before going on to paint your own ideas. You may choose a painting medium based on your experience and interest, as this course emphasizes experimentation rather than technical painting skills.
