Course Description

Artwork by Matt Steinke

Explore the ways that science and art overlap by combining engineering principles with traditional sculpture and 3D design. Investigate ways to use readily available technology like hobby motors, desk fans and clip lights to produce new works that spin, whir, sway, stagger, cast shadows, and scatter light. We will use easily accessible materials like foam core, wire, cardboard, string, water, plastic containers, wood and acrylic paint. Playfully experiment with technology and gain confidence integrating it into your creative practice. At the end of this course, you will have gained a broad knowledge of kinetic art history while exploring basic engineering that will help you consider the technical and aesthetic components of your future projects.
