Course Description

RISD CE course: Experimental Printmaking: Monoprints

Monoprinting is a one-of-a-kind printed painting, a versatile printing process in which inks are applied directly onto or wiped away from a Plexiglas surface. The plates are printed by hand so that students can execute ideas quickly, allowing for a very spontaneous way of generating prints. As students gain confidence and learn the intricacies of printing, experimentation with the medium is encouraged. The techniques of chine colle -- rice paper lightly glued to create layered color -- and trace monoprints expand individual options. Practicalities of single and multi-plate registration, texturing techniques, layering and washes are demonstrated as well as color mixing and collographs. Please note that non-toxic water-based media are used in this course.
