Course Description

RISD CE kids course: Juxtapositions

"Look at everything as though you are seeing it for the first time, with the eyes of a child, fresh with wonder." -Joseph Cornell

20th-century artist Joseph Cornell combined photos, collections and souvenirs into poetic and magical constructions, often juxtaposing related and unrelated elements. In this camp, you'll create your own shadow boxes -- with an added twist of kinetic motion. After you arrange unlike objects (from walks on the Farm and beach, as well as your own collections) next to each other in a random way, we'll brainstorm ways to use levers, pendulums, pulleys and springs to add the element of surprise to your constructions. The result, a shadow box with moving parts, is a juxtaposition of curated collections -- enhanced by drawing, painting, collage -- as well as math and engineering techniques.
