Designed for the complete novice, this course is an ideal option for those looking for a starting point into art making. It is an introduction to the materials, techniques and concepts relating to visual communication and art-making processes. Beginning with observational drawing and moving on to basic 2D and 3D design concepts, students learn design elements and principles, and how they can be applied to all fields of design, from fine art to architecture. This course also includes a brief overview of Western art history to provide students with a context in which to understand and talk about art. Classes consist of lecture, studio projects and group discussions, and media explored include pencil, gouache, cut paper and crayon. By the end of the course, students develop the necessary vocabulary with which to talk about art and design, and a greater understanding and appreciation for how the visual arts enrich our everyday lives.
