Course Description

RISD CE gouache painting course

Sharing characteristics of watercolor and acrylic paints, gouache is an opaque water-based medium that is highly pigmented, re-workable and dries to a vibrant matte finish. In this course, you'll paint with watercolor in harmony with gouache, using the transparency and opacity of these mediums to create depth, luminosity, value and texture in your work. Working from landscape photo reference material, you'll build upon existing drawing skills, employ a variety of painting techniques and learn how to plan an approach to your work. Note: This course is the second in a two-part series. While not required, it is suggested that students have completed the companion course, "Introduction to Drawing + Painting: Nature," held earlier in the semester, or have previous experience with watercolor. Please note that in addition to the lab fee, you can expect to have to buy additional supplies for this course. We try to keep this cost under $100, but for specialized courses (jewelry, wood, metals) this may be higher.
