RISD CE course: Handcraft Your Own Sneakers

Today's global supply chain makes it nearly impossible for consumers to know about the labor and materials used to make a pair of sneakers. But what if there were a way for you to create a pair of high-end footwear, from start to finish -- all by yourself, and without the use of glue or machinery? You'll learn how in this workshop, facilitated by Kathleen Grevers, senior critic, RISD Apparel Design, and Roderick Pieters, the Netherlands-based founder of SneakerKit. In the process, you'll learn how the worlds of apparel design and industrial design are integrated.

On the first day, you'll learn the sketch and design process, start to design while experimenting on the sole, participate in one-on-one and group review of classmates' designs in a modified version of RISD's critique format, and finish your design. On the second day, you'll actually make your custom sneakers.

Choosing from a number of basic patterns, you will learn how to cut to size, punch, and manually stitch uppers to the sole, and then personalize them. You'll emerge with a pair of unique and professional-looking sneakers -- and you'll know what materials to buy locally to make additional pairs for yourself or as gifts!

Upon completion, you may be inspired to expand upon your leathermaking skill set, making bags, belts, wallets and more.

Note: The workshop fee includes all materials for one pair of sneakers; meals not included.
