Course Description

RISD CE course: Public Art

This course is an introduction to the public art process: what it is, where to find it, what goes into the application process and most of all, why it is important. Beginning with the history and relevance of public art, students learn where to look for local sites and see examples of national and international work. Introduction to the application process to contemporary public art call listings illuminates the myriad issues of consideration, including appropriate concepts, viable materials, site specifications, scale and, of course, finances. The frequent challenges that arise in this charmingly idiosyncratic field are explored, including the spectacular successes and disastrous failures. To fully understand the process, students respond to a real-world installation site and develop a viable public art proposal based on their own unique public art concept. An in-class review by an expert in the field supports the development of a truly impressive public art proposal.
