Course Description

RISD CE course in painting with a palette knife

Augment and amplify your painting practice by learning to paint with a palette knife. Also referred to as a painting knife, this flexible, thin, dull-edged knife-shaped tool is a great way to push paint around work in a direct way to make dense, textural paintings. Students learn the differences between knives (according to shape and size) followed by knife handling skills, including directional applications and the different results that can be achieved. A wide variety of effects, including broad bold strokes to small details, can be made with little effort. Students make several paintings over the course of the weekend, exploring the range of options possible with this simple tool. The techniques learned in class can be used with oil paint, as well as acrylic and gouache. Please note that in addition to the lab fee, you can expect to have to buy additional supplies for this course. We try to keep this cost under $100, but for specialized courses (jewelry, wood, metals) this may be higher.
