Course Description

RISD CE course: Woven Color Structures

The structure of weaving offers exciting ways to work with color. Beginning with an introduction to basic color terminology, a more intuitive approach to color is taken as students work through a series of guided exercises to develop and experiment with a range of color possibilities. Working with a variety of materials on small cardboard and frame looms, students learn simple weaving techniques and experiment with how color can enter the work in two ways: through the chosen materials of the warp and weft, and through the construction of the weaving itself. Students practice interlacing various types of fibers, row by row, to explore color properties inherent in various types of fibers and ways they may be blended or combined. The workshop offers insight into new ways of working with color that can be integrated into other art forms. Slide presentations cover traditional and contemporary approaches to the expressive potential of color within this versatile medium. No previous weaving experience necessary. Note: The lab fee will cover most of the yarns for the in-class projects, as well as some basic tools. Students are expected to provide their own small frame looms.
