Course Description

RISD CE course: Product Development in Today's Global Manufacturing Landscape

Today's designers work within an extremely fluid manufacturing landscape, which is global in scale. Rapidly changing consumer behavior and urgent demand for new innovations are contrasted with the need for supply chain transparency, as well as moving products to market as quickly as possible. Knowledge of manufacturing processes and adaptability are key to a designer's ability to maintain control of projects. In this session, the tools for effectively mapping constraints along the path to responsible, scalable and quotable prototypes will be the primary focus. In addition, goal setting as a function of research and collaboration will be discussed as an alternative to concept-driven design. We will also look at the benefits that knowledge of manufacturing processes has on the initial product concept, and how that impacts further development and then final production.
