1899 - Handloom Weaving: The Rug
Course Description
Rugs are powerful examples of how materials and design reflect culture, function and artistry. In this course, you’ll explore the rich tradition of rug making through handloom weaving techniques, creating your own woven rug tailored to a specific use or space.
You’ll start by learning how to set up a loom, then experiment with rug making techniques such as weft-faced patterned twills, tapestry and pile. You’re encouraged to explore a wide range of materials, including yarns, cords, trims, cloth strips and recycled clothing and linens, to develop unique textures and designs.
You’ll use a portable floor loom with an 18-inch maximum weaving width, which presents fascinating design possibilities for larger pieced rugs with multiple patterns and textures. After completing an experimental sampler, you’ll design and make an original finished runner or rug as your final project.
This course is open to beginning and experienced weavers. You’ll take home a portable folding floor loom each week; expect to work at home between class sessions.
The lab fee covers warp yarn and many weft materials for samples, as well as warp yarn for your final project. You’ll need to supply your own weft materials for projects. A $75 loom fee is refunded upon return of loom in good condition.
