Course Description

RISD CE course: Mold Making: Introduction

With technological advances in mold making materials and techniques, sophisticated molds can be produced, making it possible to create multiple copies of simple or complex forms in materials like synthetic stone, beeswax, rubber, polyurethane glass, silicone rubber, Aqua-Resin and plastic -- all with little effort and consistent results. Students in this course learn additive form-building, as well as basic mold making and casting, and learn to make molds of varying complexity, from simple open-face molds to piece molds, rubber molds and blanket molds, and produce objects using each method. Demonstrations and discussions cover mixing rubber mold making compounds, releases and separating compounds, and concealing parting lines. Casting materials used are specific to individual projects. Emphasis is on being able to do casting at home and to work on multiples. The techniques introduced are valuable additions to all hand-articulated work including jewelry, sculpture, ceramics and product design, as well as the student interested in a new skill.
