Course Description

RISD CE kids course: Experiments in Interior Design

Designing a room is more than simply hanging a poster or two; it is the careful coordination of all of the furniture, textiles, lighting and display artwork. This course gives young artists an opportunity to experience the professional life of the interior designer. The instructor begins the process by establishing a design brief with budgets and schedules and the common vocabulary of design used in architecture, fashion and product design. Students learn by doing as they create a model of their reimagined room, which will provide the template for their experiments. Individually they adopt a concept that will be told in the story of their room as they choose which products and features to emphasize and which to hide. Finally, their room design project is unveiled as a model, a board and a presentation made to the class with an invitation for gentle critique.
