Silver has provided artisans with the perfect medium for creative expression through the ages. This course examines the masterworks of silversmiths, including tableware, tea and coffee services, light fixtures and other decorative objects. Beginning with the exuberant productions of 17th-century French and German Baroque silver and continuing to work of Paul Revere and the creations of the Art Nouveau, this course explores the style and function of this most remarkable precious metal. Lectures outlining the history of silver will be complemented by a visit to the RISD Museum.
