Course Description

RISD CE course: Painting: Materials and Techniques

It is essential for painters to have knowledge of and familiarity with the traditional and contemporary materials and processes specific to oil painting in order to fully perfect their craft. Through demonstrations, lectures and hands-on practice, topics covered include stretching canvas and preparing surfaces for painting supports, paints and paint application, brushes, developing a color palette, solvents and varnishes. Tonal techniques, direct painting, underpainting, glazing, and the use of a palette knife are also explored. Emphasis is on skill building and getting to know one's artistic preferences. This course was formerly titled Painting: Materials + Techniques.

Prerequisites

Students must be an adult age 18 or older to participate.

Necessary Supplies

Because this is an introductory course, you will need to purchase supplies and materials to set up your home studio. You can expect to spend $200-300 (estimate) on supplies, but note that many of these will be used again as you take other courses in this area. A supply list will be available on the course site in Canvas at least 30 days prior to the first day of class.

Once you have received your enrollment confirmation and logged in to Canvas, navigate to Upcoming Courses on the left-hand side of your dashboard. Supplies will be listed on your course homepage under the supplies heading. Some or all of your course supplies are available at the RISD Store.
