1419 - Drawing to Painting the Landscape: Plein Air

Course Description

Take the challenge: Work outside—in whatever landscape you choose, wherever you are—and bring it online for tutorials, instruction and critique. Online instruction includes presentations on value, composition and ways of creating distance in the landscape. Instructor demonstrations illustrate how to simplify complex scenery and describe key ingredients to making a successful landscape painting, rendered from life. Students select three outdoor locations and work on their own between online sessions, beginning with value studies from life. Students draw a scene one week, returning to that same location to paint it the next week using color and their value study as reference. Students work in their color medium of choice. Online sessions and discussion boards include critique to aid and support student progress. Over the six weeks, students generate a plein air drawing and painting for each of their three chosen locations.
