Animators are like magicians of film. They create convincing animations that move seamlessly to present the illusion of life. Use software like Adobe Animate and the “onion skin” tool to experiment with frame rates for different effects. Tell brief but humorous stories in loop cycles. And give characters and objects personalities expressed through a walk cycle. You will use physical and digital techniques to create whimsical animations. 

Learner Outcomes

  • Create short character animations that show personality.
  • Apply animation concepts such as timing, spacing and easing. 
  • Demonstrate proficiency in basic 2D animation software.

Prerequisites

Students must be 13-17 years of age.

Necessary Supplies

This course requires a digital drawing tablet such as a Wacom Intuos, Bamboo, or Cintiq creative tablets or equivalent. Apple iPad is insufficient for this course. Additionally, you can expect to spend up to $75 (estimate) on supplies, equipment, software subscriptions, and/or books for this course. A supply list will be available on the course site in Canvas at least 30 days prior to the first day of class.

Once you have received your enrollment confirmation and logged in to Canvas, navigate to Upcoming Courses on the left-hand side of your dashboard. Supplies will be listed on your course homepage under the supplies heading. Some or all of your course supplies are available at the RISD Store.
