Course Description

Artwork by Chris Curry

Welcome to the world of animal portraiture. Creating good pet portraits starts with the basics of drawing and painting—all through the lens of rendering pets. We will begin by learning some observational drawing techniques like continuous line, blind contour and gesture, plus sustained value studies. Then we will explore the myriad processes of using photographs as references to create dynamic portraits using traditional drawing materials, colored pencil, watercolor, and acrylic painting. Throughout the course, students will be introduced to examples of pet portraiture throughout art history to the contemporary artists of today.
