You may have seen a viral clip or two of an unassuming object being professionally appraised at an astounding value. The appraisal process can seem mysterious, but an antique’s value is calculated through combined methods of art, history, science and market research. This course introduces you to the factors considered by appraisers including a survey of key movements in art history, methods and materials used to test the construction and materials used in the creation of an object, and resources available for conducting market research. Whether you are interested in finding treasure at an antique store or have inherited an estate’s collection, you will leave with a newly trained eye that can start you on the path of appraising art and objects.
