Course Description

In this course, you'll learn key bookbinding techniques to create your own books. It covers folding, stitching, binding and finishing. You'll explore methods like stab binding, Coptic stitch, pamphlet stitch, map fold, drum leaf and hybrid structures. Additionally, you'll learn to make hard covers, dust jackets and clamshell boxes. The course also introduces the necessary tools, materials and skills to ensure each book is durable and unique. By the end, you'll have a hand-bound book to take home, perfect as a keepsake or gift. This course is ideal for anyone interested in bookmaking and a creative way to showcase work or ideas.

In-person courses cannot substitute for required certificate courses.

Prerequisites

Students must be an adult age 18 or older to participate.

Necessary Supplies

Students are responsible for purchasing their own art supplies, equipment, and/or books. For most classes, the cost is under $125 (estimate). A supply list will be available on the course site in Canvas at least 30 days prior to the first day of class. 

Once you have received your enrollment confirmation and logged in to Canvas, navigate to Upcoming Courses on the left-hand side of your dashboard. Supplies will be listed on your course homepage under the supplies heading. Some or all of your course supplies are available at the RISD Store.
