9423 - Politics of the (Art) Classroom
Course Description
This course will introduce students to ideas about teaching and learning art in various spaces (k-12 schools, community organizations, museums, etc.). Students will engage in this topic through a variety of materials/media such as critical texts from Black and Indigenous practitioners, engaging the historical and contemporary systems of the U.S. Education system, media centering art education practitioners whose politics are rooted in literacy justice, and ethnographic practices with museums and art education organizations local to students areas. The content and experiences offered during this course hope to inspire and excite students about the possibilities of art education and teaching art.
Learner Outcomes
Following completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Connect contemporary research to current practices in art and design education.
- Reflect on (and reconsider) their own perceptions about the role of art and design education in a variety of settings.
- Understand how art is taught differently in a variety of educational spaces.
- Consider how their own interests in art and design can influence and inspire youth.
- Merge theory and practice in art and design education as they practice teaching an art lesson within the course.
Notes
For RISD Students:
RISD Continuing Education (CE) credit is treated as transfer credit by RISD’s undergraduate degree programs. If approved, satisfactory completion of this Teaching and Learning in Art and Design (TLAD) course with a ‘C’ or better can count as 3 transfer credits toward non-major studio elective (NMSE) requirements. Complete the Transfer Credit Prior Approval for Major/Non-Major Credit form in etrieve before completing the online course registration.

Students seeking academic credits are urged to contact their home institution to arrange prior approval before registering.
