Course Description

Designed for beginners and those looking to refine their skillset, this course offers a comprehensive introduction to the timeless art of oil painting. You will learn the fundamentals, from understanding the properties of oil paints to mastering brushwork, color mixing and layering. Through step-by-step instruction, we will explore the history of oil painting, discover different styles and gain practical experience with tools and materials. The course emphasizes developing a personal artistic vision through the language of mark-making, color and composition.

Because this is an introductory course, you can expect to spend $200-300 (estimate) on supplies, but note that many of these will be used again as you take other courses in this area. A supply list will be available on the course site in Canvas at least 30 days prior to the first day of class. 

Once you have received your enrollment confirmation and logged in to Canvas, navigate to Upcoming Courses on the left-hand side of your dashboard. Supplies will be listed on your course homepage under the supplies heading. Some or all of your course supplies are available at the RISD Store.
