Course Description

Explore the rich tradition of shibori, an ancient Japanese textile art dating back to the eighth century. This dyeing technique involves stitching, binding, folding, twisting and clamping fabric to create one-of-a-kind patterns and textures.

You'll learn about the unique properties and chemistry of indigo, a botanical pigment that can be used to create designs as individual as the clouds in the sky. You'll be introduced to several shibori methods, including arashi, mokume, nui and itajime, by first making small samples to understand the basics. These will serve as reference points as you move on to dye larger pieces.

Next, you’ll stitch cotton and silk scarves, then immerse them in dye baths. You'll finish by opening your stitched scarves to reveal the intricate, unique patterns that make shibori such a captivating and versatile art form.
