Course Description

This six-session workshop is designed for students who have prior bookbinding experience and wish to deepen their repair skills through focused, hands-on instruction. Emphasis is placed on understanding book structure, material behavior, and ethical decision-making in repair work. Students will learn techniques for stabilizing and repairing damaged books intended for continued handling and use. Instruction covers torn paper repair, split endpaper repair, hinge tightening, corner repair, rebacking, and rebinding loose perfect bindings. Each technique is taught with attention to reversibility, restraint, and respect for the original structure and materials of the book.

The course is structured to move from low-risk, material-sensitive repairs to more complex structural interventions. Sessions are paced to allow close observation, guided practice, and discussion of when intervention is appropriate and when it is not. Students will gain experience assessing damage, selecting appropriate materials, and executing repairs with precision and
care.
