In the face of inequity and oppression, artists can convey powerful messages using image and text. Bring attention to political, environmental, and social justice topics that matter to you. Start small by incorporating drawing and type in a poster format. Go deeper by considering how performance and symbolism can strengthen your message. Through activist art, you can inform and educate the public, while amplifying voices that need to be heard. Mixed media assignments may include drawing, stencils, collage, and other items relevant to your topic.

Learner Outcomes

  • Identify political, environmental, or social justice issues that matter to you. 
  • Articulate a call-to-action related to your cause.
  • Create impactful messaging that uses images and text.
  • Express a societal concern in a way that can educate and inspire.

Prerequisites

Students must be 13-17 years of age.

Necessary Supplies

Students are responsible for purchasing their own art supplies, equipment, software subscriptions, and/or books. For most classes, the cost is under $75 (estimate). A supply list will be available on the course site in Canvas at least 30 days prior to the first day of class. 

Once you have received your enrollment confirmation and logged in to Canvas, navigate to Upcoming Courses on the left-hand side of your dashboard. Supplies will be listed on your course homepage under the supplies heading. Some or all of your course supplies are available at the RISD Store.
