9519 - Illustrating Card Decks
Course Description

The small size of playing cards provides artists with a canvas for creating meaningful images. Dive into the history and tradition of playing, trading, and tarot decks, and explore how to make them your own. All levels are welcome to join and learn about the unique qualities each type of card has to offer. For the first part of the course, three types of decks of cards are introduced and weekly prompts given with attention to symbolism and narrative to produce a set of card sketches each week. In the second half of the class, you'll choose one set of sketches and produce a small collection of polished card artwork. Project approaches in traditional or digital materials, as well as mixed media are welcome. Printing will not be covered in this course. Students will work at a larger scale and can choose to copy and print at a smaller size if they like. Whether you're interested in creating your own deck for fun or want to gain experience for freelancing in the publishing industry, this course will level up your visual vocabulary for making the art of the card.
