Course Description

Whether used for quick studies or refined paintings, colored inks are perfectly suited to creating depth, texture, and visual impact. Learn to combine the precision of line drawing with the expressive properties of colors and washes with an approach that is practical for any experience level. Exercises in layering washes, using grisaille, and various shading techniques will enable you to cultivate your own style and palette in this versatile medium. Throughout the course, you will refine your skills in developing elegant lines, nuanced shadows, convincing textures, and compelling compositions. All demonstrations will be given in acrylic inks, but you may use watercolors or traditional inks if you prefer, as acrylic inks behave similarly to watercolors. Additional techniques using colored inks, colored pens, and graphite— alone and in combination— will also be explained.

Prerequisites

Students must be an adult age 18 or older to participate.

Necessary Supplies

Students are responsible for purchasing their own art supplies, equipment, software subscriptions, and/or books. For most classes, the cost is under $125 (estimate). A supply list will be available on the course site in Canvas at least 30 days prior to the first day of class.

Once you have received your enrollment confirmation and logged in to Canvas, navigate to Upcoming Courses on the left-hand side of your dashboard. Supplies will be listed on your course homepage under the supplies heading. Some or all of your course supplies are available at the RISD Store.
