Course Description

Discover the world of abstract painting, where you'll craft artworks that capture the essence and energy of a place, object, person or experience. Regardless of your reference imagery or inspiration, you'll place trust in your personal vision to create original paintings. You'll learn to use a range of drawing and painting materials and integrate them into your work. We'll explore influential movements like abstract expressionism, cubism and color field painting, and use them as sparks to ignite your own creative vision. By embracing these historical styles, you'll discover your distinctive voice as an artist. Previous painting experience is helpful but not required.

In-person courses cannot substitute for required certificate courses.

Prerequisites

Students must be an adult age 18 or older to participate.

Necessary Supplies

Students are responsible for purchasing their own art supplies, equipment, software subscriptions, and/or books. For most classes, the cost is under $125 (estimate). A supply list will be available on the course site in Canvas at least 30 days prior to the first day of class. 

Once you have received your enrollment confirmation and logged in to Canvas, navigate to Upcoming Courses on the left-hand side of your dashboard. Supplies will be listed on your course homepage under the supplies heading. Some or all of your course supplies are available at the RISD Store.
