Course Description

Create a unique textile by learning one of the world’s oldest forms of craft, weaving, using a Dorset standing loom.  Start by learning about the loom, how it functions, and setting up the warp. You will then be guided to create a series of samples and explore innovative variations of simple weave structures, such as plain weave, twill, spaced warp, and doubleweave. Learn to identify and make use of the properties of a variety of fibers and yarns. You will have a portable Dorset loom to take home weekly between course meetings to create a final project of a one-of-a-kind textile.

Note: Dorset looms are loaned to students for the duration of the course. A $75 loom fee is refunded upon return of the loom in good condition. Students are responsible for transporting looms to and from class. When folded, the looms are approximately 42” tall x 26” wide and 12” deep, and weigh approximately 32 lbs.

The lab fee covers warp yarn and many weft materials for samples, as well as warp yarn for your final project. You’ll need to supply your own weft materials for projects.
