Great cities are the product of great civilizations. This course takes a global journey from Isfahan and Kyoto to Bath, Brasilia and Charleston, among many other extraordinary communities. Each conjures up images of architectural landmarks, heroic public squares and lively streetscapes. Each is a time capsule of a place and era where humankind has shaped its environment through visionary design. Explore how these metropolitan areas have succeeded, and what economic, political, social and other challenges they faced along the way. You'll marvel at the creative solutions and compromises they devised in design, transportation, infrastructure, etc., to reduce conflict and create harmonious environments that have attracted a disproportionate share of residents and commerce.
