Course Description

RISD CE fashion illustration course

Realizing fashion ideas usually starts with strong fashion drawing skills. Students in this course are introduced to the croquis, the ten head fashion figure, as a foundational tool for illustrating. Working from observation, class begins with gesture drawings of models as students learn to capture the movement and direction of both the figure and clothing. Focus is on how to build the fashion figure in order to best represent how a garment hangs on the body. Attention is paid to proportions and scale as well as drawing  the fashion face and other details. Students also learn to express attitude by drawing their own poses and designs. Flat sketching techniques to incorporate garment construction details are discussed and presented as used in the industry. This class focuses on exploring the creation of diverse fashion figures using various media and drawing exercises, such as collage and blind contour, to experience the many facets of fashion illustration.
