1405 - Urban Wild: Drawing + Painting the City

Course Description

From the leafy canopies of shade trees against historic buildings on Benefit Street to the sparkling flow of the river under arched bridges, summer in Providence is a perfect setting for outdoor work. The boundary between nature and the urban landscape is teeming with energy and vitality as highly adaptive nature adjusts to the encroachment of humans. This class combines these two ecosystems in a highly tactile visual way as drawing and painting are done in real time. Field sketching is introduced as a way to capture the landscape directly, the results of which are developed into longer, more sustained drawings and paintings. Students choose the medium they feel comfortable with and instruction is provided in technique, composition, medium handling, line, value and color. All levels are welcome.
