Course Description

RISD CE sketchbook course

Observing and drawing from nature while exploring the natural beauty of Westerly, Rhode Island is the focus of this workshop. This practice, working outside directly from nature, is known as "plein air" (open air). All work is done in the sketchbook, and specific exercises allow students to home in on different aspects of the landscape including land, water and sky. Work is done quickly, as the light continually changes and capturing the fleeting sensations is part of the experience. Paying attention to spatial concerns -- identifying foreground from background and the location of the horizon line -- is emphasized, and understanding eye level and view point to appropriately convey large space is introduced. Students work with pencil, charcoal and pastel.
