Course Description

RISD CE course: Drawing Studio: The Figure

The figure is one of the greatest vehicles of expression for visual artists; it is also one of the most challenging subjects to draw. Students begin with gesture drawing to capture the figure's movements in quick, deliberate lines that establish the weight and energy of the form. Students are gradually introduced to blocking in the figure and establishing the major masses. Classic methods of measuring to establish proportion and accuracy are introduced. The models' incrementally longer poses allow students to explore the role of light and shadow through value studies, while identifying the major planes of the human form helps students see the figure as a three-dimensional form in space. Developing hand-eye coordination and making accurate visual judgements are emphasized as students gain confidence in drawing from life. Media used include charcoal, conte, graphite and colored pencil. The skills used in class are applicable to a wide range of subject matter. All skill levels are welcome. Note: This course uses nude models.
