It is essential for painters to have knowledge of and familiarity with the traditional and contemporary materials and processes specific to oil painting in order to fully perfect their craft. Through demonstrations, lectures and hands-on practice, topics covered include stretching canvas and preparing surfaces for painting supports, paints and paint application, brushes, developing a color palette, solvents and varnishes. Tonal techniques, direct painting, underpainting, glazing, and the use of a palette knife are also explored. Emphasis is on skill building and getting to know one's artistic preferences. This course was formerly titled Painting: Materials + Techniques.
