Course Description

Ever imagined curating your own art exhibition? A show of other artists' work? Or even just your personal collections? The words "curator," "curated," "curatorial," etc. appear everywhere; in this course we begin to define what exactly they mean related to art and art objects and how they align with your own objectives. The course helps you access your first ideas and work on the subsequent selection process to narrow your focus and actualize those ideas. Additionally, designing support materials for PR and print advertising, online and social media are discussed. Students are introduced to the scholarly infrastructure for background research for exhibitions. While curating for a museum or gallery takes years of study and experience, learning to train your eye and utilize some of the basics of curatorial practice outlined in this course is a valuable skill with applications to many contexts. The course concludes with a hands-on exercise in setting up an exhibition space, lighting, the handling of art, and dealing with insurance.
