Course Description

RISD CE course: Domestic Still Life Photography

Still life—a work of art that depicts ordinary inanimate objects either natural or man-made—as subject matter has origins in oil painting. The genre has also become a powerful means of telling compelling visual narratives through photography. This course will focus on executing small scale still lifes at home using DIY lighting and materials, while also exploring options for more advanced setups. Technical instruction in lighting and creating still life setups will be provided in tandem with weekly creative exercises. Examples of historical and contemporary practitioners will also be shared.

Students should have prior experience/skills in the following: Fluent use of manual controls of your camera including aperture, shutter speed, ISO, light meter, and white balance. Ability to transfer photos from camera to computer without support from instructor.

Prerequisites

Students must be an adult age 18 or older to participate.
