RISD CE course: Drawing: Focus on Faces

Do you want to learn how to accurately draw heads and faces? In this course, you'll study the anatomy of the face and practice capturing likeness and facial expression. Using a variety of materials, you'll complete exercises and studies that are specifically designed to strengthen observational and rendering skills. Whether your goal is to become a portrait or comic book artist or just improve your ability to draw faces, this course will provide valuable and applicable skills.

Prerequisites

Students must be age 13-17 to participate.

Required Software/Technology
Software: a computer or tablet (phones will be too difficult to observe details) that can run CELink, and Youtube, any viewer for PDFs
Necessary Supplies/Text(s)
  • Sketchbook, 8x10 or larger
  • White drawing paper pad (or at least 6 individual sheets) (11x14” or Larger)
  • Toned drawing paper pad (or at least 4 individual sheets) (11x14” or larger) tan, brown, gray, blue, or pink
  • HB graphite pencil
  • 4 or 6 B graphite pencil
  • White plastic eraser
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Bag of Bob’s fine vine, or assortment of soft-medium vine charcoal (thin and extra thick)
  • At least 1 stick of compressed soft charcoal (cretacolor or char-kohl work well)
  • Medium and extra soft Generals charcoal pencil
  • Generals or Kum pencil sharpener
  • Generals white charcoal pencil (Do not need for first class)
  • Set of soft chalk pastels, at least 6 different colors (not including black + white) (Do not need for first class)

Non-Material Supplies:

  • Hard vertical surface, like a wall, drawing board, or easel
  • Desk lamp or spot light
  • Box cutter, utility knife
  • Mirror

Optional:

  • Filtered mask to use with pastels
  • Blending stumps or tortillons
  • Drawing chamoise
  • Drawing board
  • Masking tape
