Course Description

Natural science illustrators create realistic drawings for scientific journals, imaginative illustrations for picture books, and everything in between. Follow your curiosity about the natural world in this introductory course. Begin by developing an understanding of the basic physical structures of your subject. Draw animals, insects and plants with accuracy by referring to natural specimens and anatomical diagrams. Immerse yourself in nature by doing field sketching, or work from natural specimens and photographs. You will improve your craftsmanship while using a range of materials such as pencil, ink and watercolor.

Learner Outcomes

  • Analyze and accurately depict the physical structures and fine details of natural subjects.
  • Apply a range of illustration techniques, focusing on craftsmanship and professional presentation.
  • Research and understand natural subjects and their relationships with other organisms in their environments.

Prerequisites

Students must be 13-17 years of age.
