Course Description

How do characters move from our imaginations to our screens, toys, and works of fiction? Students will focus on the fundamentals of character design. Beginning with a written description, students will research references from history, anatomy and culture to sketch and develop the look, feel, and personality for their designs. Students will learn to develop meaningful character backgrounds and understand the importance of good storytelling needed to make strong, emotionally deep characters. Students will learn how to use shape language, graphics, and pattern to enhance their designs. Only minimal drawing skills are required and students will not be expected to animate their characters in this class. This course is relevant to all kinds of creators including animators, illustrators, comic book creators, and motion graphic designers. Participants explore the many industries where character design can be applied.
