Course Description

Artwork by Michelle B.

The human figure is the proverbial backbone of many visual art practices. This course will provide you with the essential knowledge needed to draw the human figure, from the bones out. Study the underlying structure of the skeleton, muscles and anatomical landmarks. Analyze how weight, volume and perspective shift in different positions. Combine anatomy and different stylistic approaches to bring expression into your figure drawings. Each exercise will demystify the human form and give you the freedom to depict it in any position.

This course may use anatomical images of the human figure. These images portray nude bodies to build understanding of kinesthetics and anatomy of the human form. In-person courses may also involve figure drawing sessions that feature a nude or lightly clothed model.

  • Describe volume and form using lines and value.
