Unlock the art of capturing compelling portraits in their natural surroundings. This course is designed for aspiring photographers who wish to master the techniques of integrating subjects harmoniously with their environments, creating powerful and narrative-driven images. You’ll learn to compose engaging shots, work with natural and artificial lighting, build rapport with subjects, and use unique locations effectively.

By the end of the course, you'll be able to take environmental portraits that tell a story and resonate with viewers. With a focus on both technical skills and artistic expression, this course will help you find and refine your personal photographic style, elevating your photography to new heights. 

Prerequisites

Students must be an adult age 18 or older to participate.

Necessary Supplies

This course requires a digital camera, preferably a digital single-lens reflex camera (DSLR), mirrorless, or other digital camera, including a phone camera. Additionally, you can expect to spend up to $125 (estimate) on supplies, equipment, software subscriptions, and/or books for this course. A supply list will be available on the course site in Canvas at least 30 days prior to the first day of class.

Once you have received your enrollment confirmation and logged in to Canvas, navigate to Upcoming Courses on the left-hand side of your dashboard. Supplies will be listed on your course homepage under the supplies heading. Some or all of your course supplies are available at the RISD Store.

This course requires access to Adobe Lightroom Classic. Please visit the Adobe Lightroom Classic website to check "minimum system requirements" for your computer before registering.

Other similar photo editing software is acceptable.
