Course Description

Artwork by Elliot F.

Capture the essence of a person while reflecting their unique personality. Combine basic acrylic painting techniques and proportions of the human head and body. Learn how to account for age, gender and ethnicity. Use expressive color and painting methods to produce vibrant portraits. Work with photographs and mirrors, and invite people close to you to pose as models. Concepts such as value, form, line, color and shading will enable you to portray three-dimensional subjects in any painting project.

This course may use anatomical images of the human figure. These images portray nude bodies to build understanding of kinesthetics and anatomy of the human form. In-person courses may also involve figure drawing sessions that feature a nude or lightly clothed model.

Learner Outcomes

  • Analyze and depict correct proportions of human subjects.
  • Produce a series of portraits using various approaches and techniques.
  • Use expressive color and acrylic painting techniques to capture likeness and personality.

Prerequisites
