Course Description

RISD CE course: Introduction to Jewelry: Fundamentals at the Bench

This course will introduce many of the fundamental tools and skills necessary for jewelry making. To prepare for soldering (which begins in Soldering for Professional Practice) every jeweler must learn to use essential metal working tools with precision. In this course students will learn how to properly work at the bench using the jeweler’s saw, metal files, flexible shaft rotary tool, and assorted other hand tools to make jewelry using “cold connection” methods. At the end of this course students can expect to have developed an eye and feel for the level of detail and precision required in jewelry making, and to have explored concepts including wearability, suspension and scale. These skills will serve the jeweler and any artist working in three dimensions in all future endeavors.
