Course Description

Artwork by Miriam Bucheli

John James Audubon, world-renowned ornithologist, naturalist and painter, is especially well known for his portrayal of birds. In this course students learn about Audubon's methods and then, using specimens from the digital Edna Lawrence Nature Lab collection, reimagine Audubon's birds and their environments by creating their own paintings. Students have the opportunity to study a variety of birds, their habits and habitats. They also discover how to effectively use research and observation, plus imagination, to create a visual recreation of a dynamic, true-to-life scene. Focus is on improving skills in composition, portraying form, adding highlights and shadows, and capturing detail. Watercolors, gouache, and even a little colored pencil can be used to create an "Audubon masterpiece."
