Course Description

RISD CE course: History of Photography

This history of photography will investigate the invention of the medium through the end of the 19th Century. Photography has a rich and varied history, but as John Szarkowski noted, only an arbitrary date, rather than a calendar date, can separate photography’s early development in the 19th Century from the modern era. Our study of 19th Century perspectives will explore the foundations for the evolution of photography as we know it today.

This course covers famous photographers and movements from the medium’s introduction in 1839 to approximately 1915, when world war and consciousness of modern art began to assert an influence that would guide photographic possibilities toward a new use and new appreciation. Students will study this important period of history through photographs, lectures, discussion, individual investigation, written responses, and the production of their own images based on what is discussed.
